beach walk

watching the whelks
and their sand indent trail
and mine, toe round
sand duning behind the heel
under the arch.
watching my shadow
stretch ahead
reaching for tomorrow
on dark jangle limbs with creature hands
and all the while the waves break
on the edge the world
rush to taste my toes
turn my feet to silvery fin.

a long sun’s walk passes
before i lift my eyes
from small musings
cast them way beyond
flood water breakers
beyond the horizon
where i breathe antartica
and the bigness of blue
and beyond again
until the salt
on my tongue
tastes eternity.
