mother tongue

IMG_5515

we were here before
the words were forgotten
like the taste of nectarine
in winter when sap is not sweet
and water is cold burn on skin
that aches for summer.

we were here before
the words were spoken
before we formed the words
that formed us
from the empty ache
of forgetting.
