homecoming

she said when she came there
the harvest moon was waning
and swallows were weaving flight
pursuing their summer dreams.

she said when she came there
he would say here
i made this for you
sit at my table
let me love you
and she did.

she said when she came there
she had made it for him
lifted it to his lips
said here let me love you
but his bedridden breaths
would follow his mind
out the door
and this love
was becoming
hard to swallow.

she said when she came there
she came with empty hands
as the only way to love him
was her letting go.

she said when she left there
she picked a tamarillo
at the gate
found it a few days later
absentminded on her desk
she said when she broke
through that bitter skin
to touch the juice
of summer passed
it whispered
here
let me love you
and he did.
